I went to Haarlemmerdijk recently in search of clothes, but
came home with nothing except food and drink. This was partly due to the fact
that several new foodie places have opened, including Le Sud delicatessen.
Le Sud is a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern delicatessen that is almost entirely vegetarian. The large glass display, which is about the only thing in the minimalist interior, is loaded with trays of creamy hummus, black olive tapenade, tzatziki, feta cheese, roasted aubergines and Turkish flatbread.
A selection of light meals is also available, including stuffed peppers and potato fritters orange with cumin and saffron.
There is nothing fancy about the food at Le Sud, but generous use is made of fresh herbs, spices, lemon juice and olive oil, giving the dishes the vibrancy so characteristic of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. And the prices are surprisingly cheap, starting at €1.25 (per 100 grams) for a simple cucumber salad and going up to €2.50 for prawns fried with onions and fennel.
A second branch of Le Sud is located on Spaarndammerstraat 143 (open Mon-Sat 10.00-19.00).
