Raan Phad Thai has moved to nearby Raamgracht, where Thai restaurant Klaas Compaen used to be. The Kloveniersburgwal premises are now occupied by sandwich shop Broodbar.
Thai restaurants in Amsterdam don’t get much more authentic than Raan Phad Thai, a stone’s throw from Nieuwmarkt. Push your way into the small, basic interior and you'll be greeted with a cheery, accented “hello” and lead to one of the handful of tables.
The menu is pretty standard and includes everything you would expect: green and red curries, stir-fried vegetables and rice dishes. But Raan Phad Thai’s speciality is, well, phad thai. A mighty portion of rice noodles is wokked up in minutes with meat, prawns or tofu, vegetables, eggs, chopped peanuts, loads of fresh coriander and a squeeze of tart lime juice.
Like a roadside restaurant in Thailand, service at Raan Phad Thai is bustlingly efficient and you won’t be given much chance to digest. Almost as soon as you pop the last forkful of food into your mouth, the bill will appear. With premises - and prices - this small though, you can’t really blame them. After all, the profit is in the turnover.
