Zeedijk, the main street in Amsterdam’s Chinatown, is home to several Chinese, Thai, Malay, Indonesian and Vietnamese restaurants, some much better than others. Little Thai Prince belongs to the better category.

Small and rather sparsely furnished, Little Thai Prince serves freshly prepared and spicy (not always a given in Amsterdam) Thai food. When business is slow, the cooks in the semi-open kitchen often sing along loudly to Thai music, which is endearing rather than irritating.

Compared to many Asian restaurants, such as Welcome Vietnamese Restaurant further down the street, the menu at Little Thai Prince is relatively small.

The restaurant slips up on a few dishes, like the watery sweet and sour vegetables containing mushy cooked cucumber and tinned pineapple, but they excel at the classics: tom yam soup; red, yellow, green and massaman curries with vegetables, fish or meat; fried rice and noodles; chicken satay; and a refreshing papaya and prawn salad.
