Don’t expect fancy dishes or quick service at Cafe Bern, just filling meals and a well-stocked bar. The real draw, though, is the cheese fondue, regarded by many as the best in Amsterdam.

A large saucepan of bubbling, gooey gruyère cheese is placed on the table, along with a basket of crusty baguettes. Simply tear chunks off the bread, dip into the cheese and wash down with a bottle of red wine.

Despite its central location on Nieuwmarkt, just at the edge of the Red Light District, few tourists find their way to Cafe Bern, making it a great place to mingle with the locals.
