Walking into Café Bern is like stepping back in time. The interior is dark and slightly shabby, with dried flowers pinned to the walls and worn wooden tables packed closely together. This is part of its charm.
Don’t expect fancy dishes or quick service, just a small selection of filling meals and a well-stocked bar. The real draw, though, is the cheese fondue, regarded by many as the best in the city.
A large saucepan of bubbling, gooey gruyère cheese is placed on your table, along with a basket of crusty baguettes. Simply tear chunks off the bread, dip into the cheese and wash down with a bottle of red wine.
Despite its central location on Nieuwmarkt, just at the edge of the Red Light District, few tourists find their way to Café Bern, making it a great place to mingle with the locals.
Reservations are recommended.
