Grand Hotel Amrâth

What was opened in 1916 as the head office of several major shipping companies has now been turned into the five-star Grand Hotel Amrâth. The food is average; the main reason to visit is the gorgeous 'Amsterdam School' architecture.

Many of the original details in this eye-catching building opposite Central Station have been maintained or restored. These include the marble staircase, original glass-fronted hatches where people used to buy boat tickets and large stained-glass panels in the roof depicting scenes of nautical navigation and exploration.

alt On the first floor is Grand Hotel Amrâth's bar and lounge. This provides a genteel if slightly stuffy setting to enjoy a light meal or cup of coffee before exploring the building.

The menu isn't innovative and the prices reflect the hotel’s five-star status, but the food is tasty enough and the dishes are presented with a flourish by amiable waiters. Even a cup of coffee is served on a silver tray with a white crockery sugar bowl and buttery biscuit.

On the day menu, sandwiches and wraps cost between €8 and €11; salads and light meals between €11 and €16; while a more substantial steak jumps up to €32.50. Two-, three- and four-course meals are available in the evening, or swankier food is served at the Mediterranean-inspired Seven Seas Restaurant.
