Metropolitan Deli can the summed up with one word: sweet. Shelves brim with chocolate, counter tops are piled high with cakes, and fridges are filled with vats of glossy Italian ice cream and sorbet.

Metropolitan Deli was opened on Warmoesstraat in August 2009. Sandwiched between Damrak and the Red Light District, Warmoesstraat was for a long time a rather seedy tourist strip. In recent years, the Dam Square end has seen something of a resurgence. Metropolitan Deli, in particular, has sweetened a visit to this once unsavoury street.

Owner Kees Raat makes his own chocolate, chocolate cake and ice cream. He also stocks a range of top chocolate brands, including Pacari, Organic Meltdown and Lovechock.

The chocolate looked darkly enticing, but it was the unusual flavours in the ice cream and sorbet fridge that beckoned me. The black sorbet made from amarena cherries has become Metropolitan Deli’s signature scoop, but this was unavailable when I visited.

Instead, I opted for the Campari and blood orange, a neon-hued and delicately bitter combo; and lemon and basil, which tasted deliciously refreshing at first taste and was followed by the tangy bite of fresh basil.

Open until 10pm (11pm on Fridays and Saturdays), Metropolitan Deli is perfect for satisfying late-night sweet cravings, or for those occasions you want to skip dinner and go straight to dessert. The emphasis on quality is evident - although there should be some kind of warning on the door, because just entering is enough to give you a sugar rush.
