Alfie’s, the first Australian pie shop in Amsterdam, serves top tucker from down under. Located on Ceintuurbaan, it offers a small selection of pies, along with organic coffee, fresh orange juice, Ozzie beer and Spanish wine.

Alfie’s is designed predominantly as a takeaway joint, and the interior reflects this: it’s empty apart from a wide brass counter, coffee machine (the coffees have names like Alfieccino, Latte de Alfie and Alfie l’Americano), juicer and a small display case for those pies.

Opening hours are long and these freshly baked little wonders are good at any time of day. The most eye-catching item on the menu, though, has to be Alfie’s Breakfast Pie: scrambled eggs, bacon, tomatoes and cheese encased in buttery pastry.

Other fillings include chicken with asparagus and mushrooms in white wine sauce, or the lovely salmon with spinach and tangy feta cheese. There’s also a Shepherd’s Pie, topped with mashed potato, and a vegetarian pie of Thai-style vegetables.

Behind the counter is a wall of wine. Several Australian beers are on sale, including James Boags and Tooheys Extra Dry, but rather surprisingly all the wines are from the elegant Spanish Marqués de Riscal winery. Most bottles are around the €8-€11 mark, which can suddenly hike Alfie’s otherwise cheap prices.

It’s a shame Australian vintages aren't represented, as they would have completed the Ozzie experience, but the wines on offer - particularly the big, bold 2008 Limousin - are worth shelling out a bit more than normal for.

Restrict yourself to a pie with a non-alcoholic drink or beer, though, and you’ll leave Alfie’s with change from a tenner.
