Greenwoods café and tea room offers Anglophile Amsterdammers and homesick Brits a slice of Blighty on Singel canal.

I've lived in Amsterdam for six years, and it has taken that long for the call of the motherland to become strong enough to entice me into an English café. After having finally made it, though, I had to go all the way.

Pot of tea (with milk): check.
Freshly prepared and not too oily full English breakfast of eggs (choice of fried or scrambled), bacon, sausages, fried potatoes, baked beans and toast: check.
And, because I had heard such rapturous stories about them, a scone with jam and cream: check.

Image of eggs florentine at Greenwoods cafe AmsterdamIt was a good scone, but seemed to have been warmed up in the microwave as it had lost some of its structure. It was also served with whipped rather than clotted cream, but the latter is near impossible to find in Amsterdam so perhaps you can't have everything.

Also on the menu at Greenwoods tea room is a less artery-clogging breakfast option of yoghurt with muesli, a good range of eggs dishes, sandwiches and home-made cakes, including the English classics lemon meringue pie and apple crumble.

I often go to tea rooms when I do go back to the UK because there's something quaint and nostalgic about them. It felt odd sitting in an English café in Amsterdam, but that says more about me than it does about the food at Greenwoods, which was really quite good.

Greenwoods is one of my favorite places for a late breakfast. On the very beautiful Singel Canal, it is hard to beat.

Good review of Greenwoods, however I would like to add that they really do have the proper Devonshire clotted cream. In my experience the only restaurant in Amsterdam that does. You can buy tubs of clotted cream to take away if you like. A cream tea addict.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. Perhaps Greenwoods was out of clotted cream when I visited, or they've found a supplier since then. Glad to hear it's on the menu though. I might have to go back for one of those takeaway tubs.
