Holland’s first frozen yoghurt bar has opened in Amsterdam. Not that frozen yoghurt wasn't available here before; there was just nowhere dedicated to it. Frozz has changed that.
Frozz is little more than a small serving bar and table - most people get their frozen yoghurt to go - but you don't need more for such a simple concept. The frozen yoghurt, made from Dutch yoghurt rather than reconstituted powder, and sweetened with just enough sugar to take away the tartness, ripples out of a dispenser into a cardboard tub in much the same way a soft ice does.
The €3.50 price tag includes three toppings, which range from fresh fruit, muesli and chocolate chips, to crumbled Dutch kletskop biscuits and roasted nuts.
The only small downside of this great new addition to Amsterdam's culinary scene is that the tubs seem to be too small for their contents. The server struggled to balance my three toppings on the frozen yoghurt without them tumbling straight off again. I also had to eat my way through the toppings before there was enough manoeuvring space for my spoon to reach the frozen yoghurt itself. At least you can't accuse Frozz of skimping on portion size.
Frozz is located in a corner of Spoiled Denim Bar in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets). It is the brainchild of sisters Mei Lin and Mei Lan Ang, who fell in love with frozen yoghurt on a trip to New York. Given Holland's love affair with all things dairy, it seems incredible that no one had the idea sooner.
Each 100 ml tub contains around 100 calories. Combine the current trend for healthy eating with frozen yoghurt’s novelty value and it wouldn't surprise me if other outlets were soon popping up around Amsterdam. They probably won't be called Frozz, though, because this is unfortunately a pop-up (read temporary) concept.
