Screaming Beans has taken over the premises on Hartenstraat where Neeltje bakery used to be, so it makes sense that its bread is as good as its coffee.
The beans in the name come from Bocca, a small roaster a few streets away in the Jordaan, and the crusty loaves are from Brood. These are displayed in rustic-looking baskets on the clean white walls, and sliced to order for sandwiches. The egg mayo, which looked homemade, was excellent.
Besides the regular beans that scream through the coffee machines, each month a specialty roast, such as Sun-Dried Panama or the unusual, almost grassy Unwashed Yirgacheffe, is put into the grinder. Bags of coffee and fresh bread are also available to take away.
Screaming Beans touts the training it gives its baristas, and the employees seem keen to show off their skills. Like Stumptown Coffee Roasters, which recently opened a pop-up branch in Amsterdam, foam art is the order of the day here. It doesn't add to the flavour, but it does add a certain flair.
