I’m generally not a fan of all-you-can-eat concepts, as they encourage chefs to mass produce and diners to overeat. But new Japanese restaurant Sumo has taken a more elegant approach to what is essentially gorging yourself for a fixed price.

The central Amsterdam outpost of international chain Wagamama is conveniently located between Leidseplein and music venue Paradiso. The Japanese restaurant follows the same formula as branches in other countries: reasonably priced Japanese food served reasonably late into the night.

I was walking down Zeedijk one Friday evening, when it occurred to me how many Asian restaurants there are in Amsterdam’s China Town that I still have to try. A few minutes later I was ordering at Eat Mode.
