Laid-back De Pizza Bakkers on Haarlemmerdijk specialises in pizza and Prosecco. You can drop by just for a glass of the bubbly stuff, three varieties of which are available; but most people squeeze into one of the tightly packed tables for a thin-crust pizza from the wood-burning stove.
There are eight meat and four vegetarian pizzas to choose from. These range from a basic Margherita (tomato, mozzarella and basil) and Napoletana (tomato, mozzarella, olives, capers and anchovies), to the excellent Salami finocchiona (tomato, mozzarella and fennel salami) and the unusual Trentina (tomato, mozzarella, smoky Italian bacon, marscapone and peppery rucola).
The dolce (desserts) are well worn but well done: tiramisu, panna cotta, limoncello and a fantastically sweet Calzone al cioccolata, a folded pizza filled with enough melted chocolate to give you a sugar rush for the rest of the evening. The menu states that it’s for two people to share, but we divided it between four and still couldn’t finish it.
De Pizza Bakkers is bustling, boisterous and cramped, but somehow the lack of space and privacy feels right here and adds to the restaurant’s relaxed charm.
Other branches of De Pizza Bakkers are located at Overtoom 501 and in Marqt supermarket on the corner of Rembrandtplein (to go only).
