An elevator whisked me up to the 23rd floor. My stomach did a somersault. Not because of the speed of the ascent, but because I was about to dine at Ciel Bleu.

Relatively few people - including centre-centric Amsterdammers - visit Amsterdam North, and until restaurant Hotel de Goudfazant opened deep in an industrial estate there was little reason for them to.

Brunch in Amsterdam is still the exception rather than the rule; but slowly, slowly, ventures like Jason Hartley's LoveFood, Greenwoods tea room and Cafe George are putting brunch on the menu.

I’ve been on Groupon’s mailing list for daily deals for a while but a half-price, five-course meal for two at Eau de Vie was the first one that looked enticing enough to buy.
