As the name suggests, Frank’s Smoke House just east of NEMO is a Mecca for smoked goods. But not just your average smoked meat and fish; game in the form of wild boar and vegetarian options such as tofu and camembert are also available.
Frank’s Smoke House is owned by Frank Heyn. Trained as a Cordon Bleu chef in Paris, he started ‘smoking’ in his back garden in 1993 to supply restaurants with quality smoked products (which he thought were lacking).
He opened his shop and delicatessen on Wittenburgergracht in 2000, where he now smokes and sells over 25 different items to the public. A selection of soups, stews, pates, chutneys, oils, vinegars and wines are also on offer.
Prices at Frank's Smoke House vary considerably from €1.90 per ounce for smoked bacon to €9.70 per ounce for wild Alaskan salmon (most items hover around the €4-6 per ounce mark). However, quality is high, several of the items come from sustainable sources and the staff will take the time to make suggestions if you don’t know what to choose.
