There’s a new kind of deal in town. Strawberry Earth, an Amsterdam-based sustainability platform, launched its first 'green' deals earlier this week.
Based on quality rather than quantity, according to co-founder Mette te
Velde, the deals are designed to counter the ‘anonymous mass products’
offered by the likes of Groupon and LivingSocial.
Two deals will go live each week, one of which will be an experience and one a product. The experience this week is dinner for two (€32 instead of €55) at industrial-chic restaurant TrouwAmsterdam. This has already sold out, perhaps thanks to the after-dinner roller disco that’s included in the price.
The product, which is still available, is a box of six bottles of natural French wines from Vleck Wijnen. Included in the box, which is discounted by 40%, is a Beaujolais Primeur from Domaine Marcel et Mathieu Lapierre, one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture.
I’ve had several good experiences with Groupon at Eau de Vie restaurant and Vyne wine bar, so definitely wouldn’t, er, discount it, although it’s clearly a mainstream enterprise focused on making money.
Strawberry Earth’s deals are posted on the website every Monday at midday, and even if you subscribe to the mailing list you’ll only receive one update per week. Which has to be good for the environment somewhere along the energy chain too.
