Amsterdam has another chocolate shop. Joining Puccini Bomboni, Pompadour, Metropolitan Deli, the ‘Vans’ – Vanderdonk, Van Soest, Van Velze’s – and others, Chocolate Company has opened on Haarlemmerdijk.

Chocolate Company sells own-brand nut and fruit-sprinkled squares, chocolate spread, kids’ bars studded with colourful candy and the like, but the product line revolves around the 'hotchocspoon'.

The franchise venture's original offering, the hotchocspoon is a chocolate cube with a wooden spoon sticking out of it like an upside-down lollipop. It can be licked like a lolly too, or dipped into warm milk for instant hot chocolate.

I prefer my chocolate unadorned and unadulterated, like the superb Francois Pralus 100% cacao bar from Chocolatl in the Jordaan. The Chocolate Company has a good all-round selection, though, at prices that are sweeter than some of Amsterdam’s chocolate shops.

Chocolate Company also sells cakes, ice cream and coffee. Free WiFi.
