It's almost hard to believe, but De Salade claims to be the first salad bar in Amsterdam. There are certainly other places that have a selection of salads, such as La Place and budget favourite Maoz Vegetarian, but apparently nowhere where salad is the main event.
De Salade’s salads are prepared to order, and comprise three elements: choose from the verde or rosso Italian mixed lettuce combinations, select the toppings and add a dressing.
The majority of the salads are vegetarian – goat’s cheese and walnuts, cucumber with feta and mint, and a more adventurous pear, shaved fennel and rucola – although smoked chicken, parma ham and prawns are available. Portions are medium or large and the price includes two bread rolls.
The salad bar also sells smoothies, coffee, beer and wine. There are a few seats inside and out, but most people take away.
De Salade is located on the corner of Haarlemmerplein, in what seems to be an ill-fated building. The ventures that preceded it, including a Thai takeaway and Spanish delicatessen, didn't survive long. Hopefully De Salade will last longer than the lettuce it serves.
