I recently discovered that Amsterdam's oldest cinema, The Movies, offers food and a film for a reduced price on its 'off-peak' days.
Valid from Sunday to Thursday, The Movies' film menus include a main course and one film ticket for €22.50 (a ticket on its own costs €9). Two- and three-course meals plus ticket are also available for €30 and €35 respectively.
Meals are served in the cinema's small (and dark) restaurant. Food is predominantly basic eetcafe fare with an international twist - steak and chips, veal with tabouleh, roasted vegetables with barley and pecorino - but there are the occasional gems, such as smoked tuna and salsa verde salad, or roast quail with broad beans in a light yoghurt-mint dressing.
The Movies is located in a building dating from the 17th century, which was first turned into a cinema in 1912. It screens mainly independent films in beautiful Art Deco surroundings.
