Green air travel may still be a contradiction in terms, but passengers at Schiphol Airport are being given the chance to do their bit for the environment before they fly at the Fair Taste Cafe.

The cafe, which opened on April 7, is the first sustainable, on-the-go concept at an airport, according to hospitality developer HMSHost.

All the products served in the café - mostly coffee and sandwiches - meet at least one of the conditions required by the trademarks or certifyling organisations Fairtrade, Organic, Local, Recyclable or Rainforest Alliance.

The café’s interior, a corner of one of Europe’s busiest airports, also uses recycled materials, such as old cupboards and tiles, for the walls and furniture.

A branch of Frozz frozen yoghurt bar has also opened at Schiphol Airport.
