Brug34, named after the canal bridge that crosses the Herengracht opposite it, has just opened on Utrechtestraat where Cafe Turnpike used to be. The bar is so new you can still smell the paint.

The floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides of the corner building bring new meaning to the phrase ‘see and be seen’. It feels a little like sitting in a fish bowl, but at the same time there are plenty of opportunities to ogle passersby in return from the long window seat, or chairs upholstered with rubber from inner tyres.

Brug34 is just big enough for four or five tables and a sleek white bar decorated with an enormous vase of fresh flowers. The bar doesn’t yet offer much choice but what it does, it does well: Buscaglione coffee that gets your heart pumping and one white, rose and red wine.

The owner has also made an effort to support other businesses on Utrechtsestraat. Order a fresh juice or shake and he will run across the road to Lite/Dark to get it, sandwiches are made with bread from Van Eijk bakery, cheese is from Tromp, and meat and fish comes from butcher Jong.
