Raan Phad Thai, the popular hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant on Amsterdam's Kloveniersburgwal, has opened a second branch. It has taken over the basement premises of another Thai restaurant, Klaas Compaen, on Raamgracht.

Raan Phad Thai's new location is far roomier than the cramped, canteen-like surroundings of the original Thai restaurant. Perhaps the additional space and relatively relaxed pace here have made the chefs complacent. My phad thai (fried rice noodles) were good but lacked the balanced flavours and subtle zing of fresh lime juice and coriander for which the original location is famed.

I'll put this culinary misstep down to opening jitters and give Raan Phad Thai 2 a second chance - this branch is even closer to my house and the queues, for now, are shorter.

Update: Raan Phad Thai on Kloveniersburgwal has now closed down and been replaced by sandwich shop Broodbar. This makes the second branch on Raamgracht the only branch.
