“It’s not just a shot, it’s an experience,” claims Chupitos, Amsterdam’s first shooter bar. Inspired by bars in Barcelona (chupitos means ‘shots’ in Spanish), it offers some 150 different shooters gathered from around the globe.

The shooters at Chupitos range from €2.50 to €4.50, and if the names don’t entice you, then the ‘accessories’ surely will. Body parts and sexual acts feature prominently on the menu, and you can only guess what kind of damage the ‘Anti-freeze’, ‘Napalm Bomb’ or ‘Che Guevara’ might inflict upon ingestion.

If they don’t have a silly name, then Chupitos’ shots are served with an extra gimmick, such as a marshmallow, which you can roast yourself, or a snakelike sweet, which floats in the lurid liquid like something out of a biology lab. Flaming shooters are also popular, but wait for the fire to go out before taking a sip if you value your facial hair.

Cheap drinks and special offers run during the week. Monday is student night, when beer, wine and soft drinks cost a grant-friendly €1.50 and shooters start at €2. On Wednesday nights, design your own shooters or try the Amsterdam bar’s newest creations.

Chupitos is a fun place to start the evening, and the fun factor can be upped by approaching the bar in the exploratory, er, spirit in which it was intended. Asking the bar staff to explain the menu would take hours, so try this instead: pick a drink at random, order and shoot.
