Nam Kee has opened a new branch on Amsterdam's Marie Heinekenplein. The Chinese restaurant on Zeedijk, which gained national fame after having a Dutch novel named after it, has taken over the premises of Cantinero tapas bar.
The chef who ran Nam Kee’s kitchen on Zeedijk has migrated south to the De Pijp location, taking his traditional Cantonese cuisine with him.
Specialities include roast suckling pig, Peking duck and cha siu (barbecued pork). Also on the menu at Nam Kee are the famous oysters after which Dutch author Kees van Beijnum named his 2000 novel The Oysters of Nam Kee.
Nam Kee first opened on Zeedijk in 1981, with a second branch following on Geldersekade (Nieuwmarkt) in 1992. The Chinese restaurant’s third location on Marie Heinekenplein cements its reputation in Amsterdam as a purveyor of top-notch Chinese food, which hasn't lost any of its authenticity even after three decades' absence from the motherland.
