Lombardo's has opened in the Spiegelkwartier, Amsterdam’s antique neighbourhood. The delicatessen serves creative sandwiches, salads, soups, takeaway dishes, and creamy cheesecake.
Lombardo's sandwiches are made to order, with fillings that are a step up from the popular but uninspired ham and cheese combo.
Serrano ham with peach, beetroot leaf salad and balsamic dressing was a good combination of salty, sweet and tangy; but the egg salad with homemade mayonnaise was on the runny side and the black truffle, frequently used to add instant class to menus, and in this case also adding to the price, was undetectable.
The delicatessen also sells Dutch cheese, Old and New World wines and a few gourmet goodies such as truffle oil and Norwegian smoked salt.
Lombardo's will be a welcome addition to this Amsterdam neighbourhood for anyone tired of munching mediocre sandwiches at their desk; although at around €5 for a broodje and €4-5 for a salad, it might not be an everyday indulgence.
The delicatessen's pasta dishes and changing meal of the day are also a handy dinner option if you have to work late-ish - Lombardo’s is open until 19.00 during the week, which is longer than most Amsterdam shops, but you may still find yourself queuing at Albert Heijn supermarket if it's after that.
