Café Katoen is a small, cosy café selling breakfast and lunch, and in the evening snacks and (alcoholic) drinks. Prices aren’t super cheap, but the relaxed vibe and the café’s proximity to the University of Amsterdam make it popular with students and young professionals.

Breakfast, served from 09.00, is a choice of croissant or yoghurt with muesli. The lunch menu (10.30 to 16.00) is much more extensive and consists of a range of filled rolls, crusty (and enormous) sandwiches, salads and soups. Plenty of vegetarian options are available. There is also a small selection of cakes and good fruit smoothies.

Between 16.00 and 22.00, borrelhapjes (snacks) such as toasted sandwiches, olives and sausage are served.

Service tends to be slow and it can be hard to get a table in the late afternoon or early evening, due to Café Katoen’s location close to Kalverstraat shopping street and the Tuschinski cinema on Reguliersbreestraat. If it's full, Café de Jaren just up the road on the right has plenty of seating but much less atmosphere.
