De Laatste Kruimel ('the last crumb') is a bakery and coffee shop on Amsterdam's Langebrugsteeg, selling bread, scones, brownies, cakes and slabs of quiche topped with curls of crispy ham.

De Laatste Kruimel's windows are piled high with freshly baked goods. It is marketing in its most basic form, but it works. When I visited, the coffee shop was packed with shoppers, students (who get a 10% discount) from nearby University of Amsterdam, and freelancers balancing laptops on their knees.

In addition to forming novel shelves for pots of home-made jam and lemon curd, the pallets also give the place a transient feel, as if you have walked into a food tent at a festival and the whole thing might pack up and disappear at the end of the day.

From the blackboard, I chose a sandwich with stolwijker, a strong Dutch cheese, walnut pesto and sliced tomatoes. The charming non-native-speaking waitress asked me, in Dutch, whether I wanted a white or black roll (she meant brown, of course) and whether I wanted large or small. When I inquired what the difference was, she pointed to the window where four sample sandwiches were hanging on strings like an edible mobile. I also ordered coffee, a scone and jar of lemon curd.

After all of De Laatste Kruimel's quirky details, I was surprised to get my coffee in a paper takeaway cup, although the coffee was good and robust. The sandwich, wrapped in greaseproof paper and held together with a cocktail stick, was excellent. The brown roll was crusty to the point of jaw breaking – just the way I like it – and the walnut pesto had the nutty depth impossible to achieve with pine nuts.

I took the scone, which had toppled over during baking and started growing a second scone out of the side, and lemon curd home. I smeared a little of the tangy curd on the scone, and ate the rest straight out of the pot with a spoon.

De Laatste Kruimel coffee shop is delightfully ad hoc and a great addition to this formerly dingy part of Amsterdam.

The above review calls this a "coffee shop." It is a café and does not sell drugs.

Thanks for the comment, AmsterdamMan. Coffee shop is a legit term for a place that sells coffee. The Amsterdam version is usually spelled coffeeshop, to avoid confusion.

De Laatste Kruimel was a nice idea when it started...we sat on wobbly uncomfortable stools and ate our dry carrot cake (with sugary sweet icing instead of the standard sour cream...wha?) on a piece of cardboard with a disposable fork. Coffee in a paper cup. Beside an over full and dirty garbage can above a dirty floor and walls. Probably good for take away but to sit and enjoy forget it. The photos here show china...didn't see any while we were there. The logo is also hard to see in the windows. All the little details that make a place special were missing. No doorstop just a plank stuck in the door to trip over. Nice French chanson music.

Sad to hear this Mather. I thought it was such a great addition to this part of Amsterdam. I'll have to re-review it (although your comments don't really induce me to go back...).

Mather, I don't recognise any of your complaints about De Laatste Kruimel, despite visiting this place almost on a weekly basis. You might not like a certain combination or decoration; but "garbage" and "dirty walls"? Never seen or smelled.

Just fresh pastry, coffee and tea. In large quantities and served with a smile. And above all: delicious.

So, Eat Amsterdam, just go there again. I'll vouch for it

So true! I don't where Mather has been, but De Laatste Kruimel is amazing. Yes it has been discovered by more people, which makes it more crowded, but the quality of the great cakes and sandwiches definitely doesn't suffer, neither does the service! Great to have tea or lunch with my friends, especially on the balcony when it is nice weather. One of my favourite places in Amsterdam!

I recently visited De Laatste Kruimel while I was in Amsterdam on November 24th. The service and food were outstanding! I ordered a tuna melt and it was the best! The only issue me and my boyfriend had was there was literally barely room to move around in there and if you got a seat then you were very lucky. And we luckily managed to get a seat but it was right beside the cashier so I was constantly being pushed up against while people were trying to pay and leave. I really do hope they get a bigger place at some point.

hi..just came back from Amsterdam last night..before going there i did a good research for restaurants and cafes among others.. to be honest i did not have this place on my list.. well this is the most beautiful cafe - bakery - gourmet place i've ever been.. I've travelled all over Europe and i have never tasted so amazing cakes and brownies and quiche and tarts.. i tried a little bit of everything.. it was simply ASTONISHING..a PARADISE OF TASTES should be the name.. on my next visit in Amsterdam i will be there all the time..quality i've never seen before.. i don't know who's the owner but he/she certainly knows how to respect people..
