Café de Jaren is a huge bar, café and restaurant. Service is notoriously slow, but its location near Kalverstraat shopping street means it pulls in locals, shoppers and tourists alike.
It's a bit of a mystery why this two-storied Amsterdam bar, café and restaurant is so popular. It is big and spacious, granted, which is very un-Amsterdam, and has a lovely terrace on the water. Apart from that, however, it is pretty middle of the road.
The food, which ranges from sandwiches, soups, salads and cakes during the day, to Dutch/Mediterranean vegetarian, fish and meat dishes in the evening is average, and the service notoriously slow.
Despite this, Café de Jaren continues to pull in hordes of locals, shoppers from nearby Kalverstraat and tourists, often making it hard to get a seat. If you're in the area, you're better off going to Cafe Katoen, about 30 metres back towards Kalverstraat, opposite Hotel de L'Europe. It can be hard to get a table here too, but at least it has character.
