Cafe Puccini serves lunch, afternoon tea, cakes and light evening meals (when there are performances at nearby Het Muziekgebouw), but for me it will always be a brunch spot.
Puccini is squeezed into a triangular corner building on beautiful Staalstraat, two doors up from Puccini Bomboni, the superb chocolate shop with a similar name but not the same owner.
The cafe is at its best when the sun is shining, and you can pull up a stool at the long table next to the window or people-watch on the pavement outside.
Yoghurt with cruesli (crunchy muesli) and home-made pastries are served from 08.30, with a small selection of sandwiches, soups and salads following later in the morning.
My favourite brunch option at Puccini is the well-filled pastrami and pickle sandwich; or the soft scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and whole-wheat toast.
The coffee at Puccini is also strong, hot and plentiful. This, combined with the food, is my idea of the perfect start to the day.
