De Pijp neighbourhood offers plenty of food options, from Albert Cuyp market, to ethnic cafés and more upmarket eateries, such as Eetcafé Vrienden.

Located on the corner of Ruysdaelkade and Ceintuurbaan, Eetcafé Vrienden’s interior is a sunny mix of yellow walls and gaudily painted chairs, accompanied by a Spanish soundtrack.

The basic menu is equally Mediterranean influenced, with a handful of Dutch eetcafé standards (satay, North Sea prawns) and Northern African dishes, such as the gorgeously fragrant roast chicken on a mound of bulgur wheat, thrown in for good measure.

Desserts include Dutch apple pie, panna cotta and a superbly rich chocolate mousse.

The restaurant also serves tapas (meatballs, chorizo, marinated anchovies), Dutch snacks (bitterballen, spicy vlammetjes, sausage) and doubles as a bar.

The chef can be overenthusiastic with the salt, but portions are enormous, prices small and many dishes are home-made. You might not want to linger at Eetcafé Vrienden, but you can't beat the value at this cheap Amsterdam restaurant.
