Café Bern
Walking into Café Bern, located just at the edge of the Red Light District, is like stepping back in time.
The interior is dark and slightly shabby, with dried flowers pinned to the walls and worn wooden tables packed closely together.
This is part of its charm, however. Don’t expect fancy dishes or quick service, just a small selection of filling
meals and a well-stocked bar. The real reason to go here, though, is the cheese fondue, regarded by many as the best in the
city.
A large saucepan of bubbling, gooey gruyère cheese is placed on your table, along with a basket of
crusty baguettes. Simply tear chunks off the bread, dip into the cheese and savour.
Despite its central location,
few tourists find their way to Café Bern, making it a great place to mingle with the locals.
Note that
reservations are recommended and payment is by cash only.
Cheese fondue, salad and wine for two around €50.
