Vleminckx sells nothing except Vlaamse frites (Flemish fries) but it has been doing this since 1957, so it's not hard to understand why the place is an Amsterdam institution.
The long, thick slices of potato (cut on the premises) are fried twice to ensure they are soft and crumbly on the inside and crispy and golden on the outside.
Portions come in small (€1.70) or medium (€2.20) and are served in cheerful red-and-white checked paper cones. Add €0.50 cents and select one of the more than 20 sauces, a generous ‘goop’ of which will be spooned over the top layer of fries. Sauces include curry, mustard, chili and ketchup. But for an authentic experience, give all of these a miss and choose mayonnaise or peanut sauce. They both taste really good.
Vleminckx' fries are served out of a kitchen which is little more than a hole in the wall on Voetboogstraat, a small street not far from the busy shopping Meccas of Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat. There is nowhere to sit down – and nearly always a queue – but these fries are worth the wait. Grab a cone and eat on the move.
