I have been eating out of necessity for three decades and eating for a living for the last six years. When I first arrived here from the UK, in 2003, Amsterdam was a bit of a culinary desert but things were starting to change. Since then, a young generation of chefs has introduced new ideas, dishes and ingredient combinations to the city's palette - and palate.

Image of writer Cecily LayzellDespite the global economic downturn of the past year or so, the number of new restaurants in Amsterdam only seems to have increased. Organic snack bars, top-quality grills, a whole slew of Italian eateries and the first branch of Starbucks are just some of the places that have seen the light of day in the past 12 months.

In 2009, after having eaten my way through hundreds of Amsterdam restaurants for business and pleasure - accompanied by my trusty tablemate R. - I set up Eat-Amsterdam.com. My aim is to offer English-speaking residents and visitors to Amsterdam independent reviews of restaurants, bars and food shops, as well as up-to-date information on culinary trends and events - a resource I think the city is currently missing.

Corporate journalism and Dutch-to-English translation

When I'm not working on Eat-Amsterdam.com, I'm a freelance writer and editor. I've been the Food & Drink editor for Time Out Amsterdam magazine, and have written about Dutch food for the Time Out Amsterdam guide, Holland Herald (KLM's inflight magazine) and Suite101.com.

I have also produced communications and marketing materials and done Dutch-to-English translations for food-related corporate clients such as Actimel and Douwe Egberts.

If your restaurant or café in Amsterdam is opening soon and you would like to see it reviewed on this site, or if you are a publisher interested in articles about Amsterdam or food in Amsterdam, please get in touch.

Thanks for visiting Eat-Amsterdam.com and, as the Dutch say, eet smakelijk (enjoy your meal).
